Top Gun: Maverick, Stepped Down to 2nd, Surpassing 4.6 Million Audiences in Total

Marvel's superhero film, Thor: Love and Thunder, was released on July 6 and topped the box office on its 1st weekend. According to the Korean Box Office Information System (KOBIS) of the Korean Film Council (KOFIC), Thor: Love and Thunder attracted 1,184,510 audiences over the weekend (July 8~10), recording 49.9 % of the sales share. The weekend sales of the film are USD 10 million.

Thor: Love and Thunder attracted more than 1 million viewers on its opening weekend, but its record is slightly lower than the number of the 1st-weekend audiences of the previous Marvel films. Marvel Studios' Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness had about 1.717 million audiences, while Spider-Man: No Way Home had 1.744 million audiences over their first weekend.

Top Gun: Maverick stepped down to 2nd place on the weekend due to the release of Thor: Love and Thunder, but its total number of the weekend audiences is not much different from first place, recording 804,308 weekend audiences with 32.7% sales share. In particular, comparing the number of screenings, Thor: Love and Thunder was screened 30,056 times while Top Gun: Maverick 14,123 times, which is less than half of Thor: Love and Thunder, but the difference in the number of audiences is only about 300,000.

Korean films took from 3rd to 5th this weekend. Director Park Chanwook's Decision to Leave recorded 3rd, adding 204,484 weekend audiences to 885,284 audiences in total. The Roundup is 4th, with 12,588,779 audiences in total, ranked 13th in the box office in Korean film history, even surpassing the record of Masquerade (12,324,062 audiences in total). Since the films up to 9th place in the Korean box office history have the records of 12 million audiences in total, attention is drawn to whether The Roundup will settle in the top 10 of Korean box office history or not. 5th place is The Witch: Part 2. The Other One with 2,772,674 audiences in total so far, and we’re curious whether it can exceed the record of 3.18 million audiences in total that the previous episode has.

The total number of audiences on the 1st weekend of July is 2,419,163, up about 500,000 from 1,974,344 last week. Also, since Thor: Love and Thunder and Top Gun: Maverick are ranked at the top 1st and 2nd in the box office, the audience share by nationality recorded 47.1% for Korean films and 52.9% for foreign films.
