Morbius, Won 2nd Place, an Anti-hero Film that Expands the Worldview of Spider-Man

In the 14th week of 2022, the second week of April, Sonic the Hedgehog 2, released on April 6, topped the box office hit. From April 8 to 10, the film recorded 111,096 viewers (USD 841,816) with 31% of sales. Sonic the Hedgehog 2 started in 2nd place at the box office on the day of its release, fell to 4th place, and then attracted the moviegoers intensively last Saturday and Sunday. 

Sonic the Hedgehog 2 is a sequel to the film Sonic the Hedgehog (2020), featuring the popular game character Sonic the Hedgehog. The new film is about Sonic, the hero who protects the Earth, confronting Dr. Robotnik, the villain who has returned. Released in North America on April 8, Sonic the Hedgehog 2 also topped the North American box office with a profit of about $71 million in its opening week. 

Morbius, which topped the box office last week, fell one step down to 2nd place. With 62,000 viewers during the weekend, the total number of viewers in the 2nd week of its release is 425,506. The number of screens for Sonic the Hedgehog 2 was 1,129, more than Morbius (967), but the number of screenings for Morbius was 8,655, more than Sonic the Hedgehog 2, which is 7,534. 

The new films released on April 6 ranked from 3rd to 5th at the weekend box office. Director Michael Bay’s new action Ambulance won 3rd place. It is a crime thriller by two brothers who make dangerous plans to turn the tide in their lives. Hollywood stars such as Jake Gyllenhaal, Yahya Abdul-Mateen II, Eiza Gonzalez, etc. appear in the film. It recorded 53,265 viewers during the weekend (USD 449,013), and the total number of viewers in its opening week is 81,516.

Stellar, a Korean comedy film, ranked 4th place with 39,284 spectators (USD 303,690). Starring Son Hojun, Lee Kyuhyung, and Heo Sungtae of Squid Game, the film is a comic road movie of two guys searching for a missing supercar. The Electrical Life of Louis Wain, where Benedict Cumberbatch played a genius painter, ranked 5th place, recording 16,092 viewers during the weekend with 5% of sales. 

The number of moviegoers on the 2nd weekend of April is around 344,000, a slight decrease compared to the previous week.
