Latest 007 Tentpole Fails to Catch on in Korea

Despite Hangul Day falling on Saturday, holiday crowds failed to materialize at the box office as an already quiet marketplace slowed a further 30%, with 444,000 tickets sold over the weekend. Buoyed by strongholds, the local market share edged up slightly to 34%.

No Time to Die slid 44% but managed to hold onto first place in its second weekend with 213,000 sales (USD 1.83 million) counted over the weekend. The 007 film has filled 981,000 seats (USD 8.01 million) over its first 12 days as the Bond franchise continues to struggle to gain traction in the Korean market.

After four weekends on the charts, the local thriller On the Line remained a draw, slowing just 5% as it added 85,000 entries (USD 723,000) to its haul, which has now reached 1.27 million admissions (USD 10.48 million).

Also down just 5% was fellow Chuseok holiday release Miracle: Letters to the President in third place. The heartwarming drama sold 43,000 tickets (USD 343,000) over the frame and has so far been seen by 610,000 viewers (USD 4.8 million).

The Japanese children’s animation Crayon Shin-Chan: Crash! Scribble Kingdom and Almost Four Heroes jumped up two spots, drawing 13,000 spectators (USD 105,000) over the weekend for a new total of 171,000 entries (USD 1.36 million).

Closing out the top five was another Japanese animation, as Belle: The Dragon and the Freckled Princess slowed 20% and added 12,000 viewers (USD 102,000), for a total of 48,000 admissions (USD 388,000).

Business should see a major boost this weekend with the arrival of the comic book sequel Venom: Let There Be Carnage, which is posting strong presales, which were already over 50% as of Monday morning.
