HITMAN’S WIFE’S BODYGUARD Opens in 2nd Place

Business had a slight uptick once more during the last weekend of June, which welcomes its first number one Korean film in eight weeks. Overall sales came in at 797,000 admissions, with the local market share rising to 34%. With a Marvel film on the way and Covid-19 protocols set to be eased in July, cinemas could welcome significantly more traffic in the coming weeks.

Coming in the first place was the action-thriller HARD HIT from CJ Entertainment. The directing debut of editor Kim Changju and the first leading role for supporting star Jo Woojin, the film brought it 254,000 spectators (USD 2.2 million) over the weekend, with 351,000 sales (USD 2.97 million) counted over its first five days. Though the competition will be stiff in the coming weeks, the film has garnered positive reactions.

Debuting in the second was the Hollywood sequel Hitman’s Wife’s Bodyguard with 136,000 entries (USD 1.21 million) throughout the weekend and 237,000 seats (USD 2.1 million) filled since its Wednesday bow.

Disney’s Cruella continues to impress, dropping just 18% during its fifth weekend, which recorded 133,000 admissions (USD 1.18 million). To date, the sleeper hit has drawn 1.45 million viewers (USD 12.44 million).

Horror sequel A Quiet Place Part II fell three spots and 52% in its sophomore frame, with 130,000 sales (USD 1.17 million) over the weekend for a running total of 619,000 entries (USD 5.47 million).

Rounding out the top five was the Pixar animation Luca, which was down 31% in its second weekend with 80,000 tickets (USD 649,000) sold, and a running total of 245,000 admissions (USD 1.98 million).

Looking to dominate the charts next weekend will be Black Widow, the long-delayed Marvel film which is currently experiencing a healthy lead on the reservations chart. But before that, we may have another local chart-topper in the form of the horror Midnight, which is debuting day and date this week in theaters and on the streaming service TVING.
