Hollywood Blockbusters Keep Admissions High in Early June

Long-delayed Hollywood blockbusters are continuing to fuel the box office recovery as the business got a 7% boost over the past weekend, with 803,000 tickets sold. There were no major new domestic titles once again, keeping the local market share down at 3%.

Horror franchise entry The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It claimed the top spot during its opening, as it welcomed 295,000 spectators (USD 2.68 million), with 346,000 viewers (USD 3.13 million) counted over four days. The previous two entries in the franchise attracted roughly two million viewers a piece in Korea.

The Disney live-action adaptation Cruella rose 10% in its sophomore frame, with 248,000 entries (USD 2.21 million) over the weekend, boosting its total to 664,000 admissions (USD 5.68 million) so far. The film has plenty more on the way as it continues to perform strongly on the reservations chart, already surpassing The Conjuring by Monday morning.

Down 53% and two spots during its third weekend was the action franchise film Fast & Furious 9, which added 173,000 viewers (USD 1.52 million) to its haul. The film has now reached 2.05 million spectators (USD 17.78 million) and should take the pandemic box office crown for a foreign film over the next few days, though it may lose the title shortly after that.

Over four months into its run, Demon Slayer the Movie: Mugen Train rose a staggering 68% as it filled another 25,000 seats (USD 216,000), boosting its total to 2.1 million admissions (USD 18.2 million). Given its steady numbers, there’s every chance it will lose its box office crown to Fast & Furious 9 only to reclaim it in the coming weeks.

Yoo Ha’s heist film Pipeline crashed 78% in its sophomore frame, during which it sold 13,000 (USD 109,000) tickets, for 124,000 sales (USD 982,000) to date.

Another western film is looking to take control of the charts this coming weekend as Guy Ritchie’s Wrath of Man, with Jason Statham, currently has a comfortable lead atop the reservations chart.
