Local Titles Hold on to Massive Market Edge

Despite no major new releases, there was some good news on the charts as business grew 10% week-on-week with 617,000 spectators packing into multiplexes. This was largely thanks to a local word-of-mouth hit that helped keep the local market share very high, at 84% of all sales.

After comfortably claiming first place last weekend, although with a depressed COVID Era gross, word of mouth has had a major effect on the new drama SAMJIN COMPANY ENGLISH CLASS, which experienced a spectacular 42% rise during its sophomore weekend on the charts. The local hit had 384,000 entries (USD 3.22 million) over its second weekend, pushing its total up to a respectable 932,000 admissions (USD 7.2 million), with plenty surely ahead.

Still a presence on the charts was the Chuseok champ Pawn, which slowed 26% with another 54,000 seats (USD 423,000) filled over the weekend. After five weeks in theaters the drama has brought in 1.67 million viewers (USD 12.57 million).

Up one spot but down another 54% was the thriller led by YOO Ah-in Voice of Silence, with another 25,000 tickets sold over the frame (USD 208,000). To date, the well-reviewed film has filled 393,000 seats (USD 3.05 million).

A re-release of the popular Hollywood music drama Whiplash claimed fourth place with 23,000 sales (USD 193,000) over the weekend, pushing the lifetime total of the Damien CHAZELLE film to 1.62 million entries (USD 11.39 million).

Rounding out the top five was a new final cut of the summer action noir hit DELIVER US FROM EVIL. The new version brought in 18,000 spectators (USD 152,000) over the weekend and has sold 27,000 tickets (USD 205,000) since its mid-week launch. As a reminder, the original theatrical cut of DELIVER US FROM EVIL scored the biggest gross of any film during the pandemic to date, welcoming 4.36 million viewers (USD 34 million).

Looking to unseat SAMJIN COMPANY ENGLISH CLASS this coming weekend, which remains a credible threat going into its third week, will be a new local challenger in the form of the crime film Collectors with LEE Je-hoon.
