UNHINGED Debuts in Distant Second Place

Following last week’s massive Chuseok holiday bounce, business fell back to earth over the past weekend as admissions fell about 50% week-on-week. However, with 534,000 tickets sold over the weekend, business was about 30% better than the week before the holidays, as audiences continue to return to theaters. With a local holdover leading the pack, the domestic market remained strong at 63%.

Slowing 49% in its post-holiday sophomore weekend, CJ Entertainment’s Pawn remained in first place with 259,000 sales (USD 2.02 million), giving the drama 1.24 million entries (USD 9.39 million) to date. Though local competition is on the way this week, reservations remain strong for the film, from reliable hitmaker production house JK Film.

Debuting in second place was the Russell CROWE-fronted thriller Unhinged, which filled 61,000 seats (USD 483,000) over the weekend and clinched a total of 89,000 sales (USD 673,000) over its first five days.

Down 71% in its second weekend was the Gerald BUTLER disaster film Greenland, which recorded 37,000 sales (USD 290,000), raising its total to 303,000 admissions (USD 2.27 million).

Crashing a hefty 81% after its holiday debut was the local crime comedy The Golden Holiday with KWAK Do-won. With 35,000 entries (USD 272,000) over the weekend the Showbox title pushed its total to 518,000 sales (USD 3.8 million) to date.

Closing out the top five was the Warner Bros tentpole Tenet which shed 50% of its audience during its seventh weekend on the charts. Welcoming 34,000 viewers (USD 295,000), the film has now accrued 1.88 million admissions (USD 15.14 million), the highest total for a foreign film in Korea during the COVID-19 Era to date.

A range of new titles will be trotting into theaters this weekend as distributors steadily gain some confidence that audiences will show up for new content. Challenging Pawn’s hold on the top of the charts will be the local thriller Voice of Silence with YOO Ah-in and the indie Stone Skipping.
