Local Hits Continue to Dominate COVID-19 Market

Business soared over 40% during the past weekend, as a new local title furthered Korea’s dominant streak in the summer of 2020. Korean films accounted for over 90% of sales, which reached 1.08 million, the second highest weekend total we’ve seen during the COVID-19 Pandemic.

Replacing Peninsula at the top of the charts was the geopolitical action-drama Steel Rain2: Summit, reuniting director YANG Woo-suk and stars JUNG Woo-sung and KWAK Do-won from the original 2017 hit. With a 62% share of sales, the film debuted with 662,000 entries (USD 4.92 million), reaching a total of 1.02 million viewers (USD 7.03 million) since its Wednesday bow. This represents a decent start, but with a muted audience response and massive competition on the way this coming week, the film will have its work cut out for it going forward.

After two first place finishes, Peninsula dropped a spot as it slowed another 50%. With a further 303,000 spectators (USD 2.24 million) counted, the hit sequel has now reached 3.44 million admissions (USD 25.06 million), well over its 2.5 million break-even point.

On its second weekend of rerelease, Disney’s hit Aladdin slowed 29%, banking another 29,000 sales (USD 176,000), which raised its gargantuan lifetime total to 12.68 million tickets sold (USD 90.28 million).

Entering the chart in fourth place was the Chinese animation Happy Little Submarine: Space Pals. The film filled 25,000 seats (USD 169,000) over the weekend, with 32,000 viewers (USD 208,000) counted over its first five days.

Now in its fourth week in theaters, the Chinese romantic drama Better Days eased just 31%, claiming the fifth spot on the charts with 6,000 entries (USD 43,000). The title has to date secured 59,000 entries (USD 421,000).

Looking to top the charts this coming week is the incoming action-drama DELIVER US FROM EVIL, starring HWANG Jung-min and LEE Jung-jae. As of early Monday morning, the film is well on its way to topping the reservations, with a 34% share of sales, versus 36% for Steel Rain2: Summit.
