Coronavirus Fears Dampen Korean Theatrical Admissions
Theatrical revenue remained low in the midst of fears over the new 2019-nCoV coronavirus. This week’s admissions were down only a marginal 6%, however that was with a pair of major new titles, versus last week’s crop of holdovers. 1.04 million viewers made their way to theatres, with 76% of them snatching up tickets to local films, continuing a strong run for the domestic industry.
Debuting in first place was the horror film The Closet, featuring ASHFALL (2019) star HA Jung-woo and KIM Nam-gil. The CJ Entertainment film opened with 489,000 sales (USD 3.68 million) over the weekend, with 681,000 entries (USD 5 million) recorded over its first five days.
Dead on arrival in its first frame was the DC Comics titles Birds of Prey, which posted a meagre 166,000 admissions (USD 1.29 million) over the frame, with 260,000 viewers (USD 1.96 million) counted since its Wednesday launch.
Down 68% in its third weekend was the Lunar New Year hit The Man Standing Next, as it welcomed another 159,000 spectators (USD 1.19 million). To date, the period political thriller has welcomed 4.58 million viewers (USD 33.38 million).
Meanwhile fellow holiday success HITMAN: AGENT JUN receded 72%, filling another 100,000 seats (USD 697,000) and raising its haul to 2.35 million admissions (USD 16.9 million).
Rounding out the top five was the local animation Miniforce: Deeno the King of Dinosaurs, with 34,000 tickets (USD 224,000) sold over the three-day frame and 42,000 entries (USD 279,000) counted since Thursday.
Greta GERWIG’s Oscar-nominated period drama Little Women is currently topping the reservations chart and will open on Wednesday along with the local election comedy HONEST CANDIDATE, starring RA Mi-ran.
The Korean thriller BEASTS CLAWING AT STRAWS, which recently debuted at the International Film Festival Rotterdam, was originally scheduled to open as well, but has been postponed in the wake of the current health scare.
