A LITTLE PRINCESS Debuts in 4th Place

Despite a wide array of new titles invading the marketplace, a Disney holdover once again held on to the top spot while business overall slowed by around a third. 2.35 million tickets were sold, with only 13% being snatched up by local productions, though the domestic industry should be back on form next week, when the end-of-year blockbusters begin their assault on the charts.

Taking its third straight weekend crown was the animated hit Frozen 2, down 47% but still managing a massive 1.38 million (USD 9.97 million) entry weekend. This pushed its total to a stellar 10.7 million admissions (USD 75.19 million), putting it all the way up to fifth place on the all-time chart for foreign films, just behind Avengers: Infinity War, and 22nd on the overall box-office chart, with plenty of time left to keep climbing.

Remarkably, this is Disney’s third film to cross the ten million admission mark this year in Korea, following Avengers: Endgame and Aladdin. Including local releases, that makes 2019 the first year to welcome five ten million viewer hits.

Despite strong reviews and audience scores, Ford V Ferrari wasn’t able to rev past the Disney champ as it debuted with a middling 342,000 (USD 2.65 million) viewers over the weekend and 458,000 spectators over five days (USD 3.46 million). With so many high-profile releases on the way it will have a hard time completing many more laps on the charts.

Similar story for the Hollywood whodunnit Knives Out which mustered just 164,000 sales (USD 1.19 million) in its debut, with a total of 237,000 tickets (USD 1.66 million) sold since its Wednesday bow. As Oscar-worthy, star-driven, adult-oriented fares, Ford V Ferrari and Knives Out may well have eaten into each other’s business opening during the same weekend.

Debuting further down in fourth place with only 157,000 sales (USD 1.09 million) was the local family drama A Little Princess with NA Moon-hee and KIM Su-an. Over five days the film has drawn in 264,000 spectators (USD 1.72 million).

Closing out the top five was another new entry, the English romcom Last Christmas, which sold 115,000 tickets (USD 823,000) over the weekend and filled 144,000 seats (USD 1.02 million) since its Wednesday launch.

While Frozen 2 is still a threat going into its fourth week, Hollywood is launching a new major contender this week in the form of the Dwayne JOHNSON action-adventure fantasy Jumanji: The Next Level.
