PARASITE Crosses 8 Million Viewers, Shuts Out MEN IN BLACK

A strong holdover rose back to first place during a quiet June weekend as new releases once again struggled, bringing overall business down another 30% to 2.34 million admissions. Choices were limited for viewers in theatres as the top three releases claimed 92% of sales, while the domestic share of the market fell down to 30%.

After spending two weeks in second place, Disney’s live action update of Aladdin soared back to the first rank during its fourth weekend as it slowed just 8%. The sleeper hit fantasy sold just over one million tickets (USD 7.56 million) over the weekend, boosting its running total to a stellar 5.33 million admissions (USD 38.25 million) to date.

Having burnt off most of its demand, the universally acclaimed Palme d’Or winner PARASITE from director BONG Joon-ho eased 58% in its third outing as it recorded another 689,000 entries (USD 5.18 million) over the frame. The Korean genre mashup has so far attracted a massive 8.34 million spectators (USD 60.28 million) though it now seems unlikely that the film will join the vaunted ten million admissions club.

Debuting in third place was the franchise entry Men in Black: International, which has suffered from poor critical and audience reactions. The film filled a middling 442,000 seats (USD 3.39 million) during its first weekend, with 638,000 visitors (USD 4.79 million) recorded in total since its Wednesday launch.

Opening much further behind in fourth place was the American animation The Pilgrim’s Progress with 57,000 sales (USD 380,000) over the weekend and 78,000 tickets (USD 508,000) sold since Thursday.

Rounding out the top five after a 91% crash was the sophomore frame of X-Men: Dark Phoenix which added just 33,000 viewers (USD 236,000) as its total inched up to 845,000 admissions (USD 6.32 million).

Some new blood should finally shake things up this coming week as both the well-reviewed Pixar tentpole Toy Story 4 and the local gangland political drama Long Live the King are set to open over the coming days.
