DUMBO Update Fails to Take Flight

Local titles took a backseat as a pair of major Hollywood imports launched at the Korean box office this past weekend. Admissions were level with the previous week at 1.83 million entries while American films edged out Korean titles with a 55% market share.

Mirroring its successful debut a week earlier in North America, Jordan PEELE’s hotly anticipated second film Us scored a record debut for a foreign horror film on its opening day, when it welcomed 229,000 spectators (USD 1.78 million). The film brought in 629,000 viewers (USD 5.1 million) over the weekend and has recorded a strong 936,000 entries (USD 6.98 million) over its first five days. PEELE’s first film Get Out wound up with 2.14 million sales in the market.

Dropping one rank and 46% in its sophomore frame was the local financial thriller Money which added another 602,000 viewers (USD 4.73 million) to bring its 12-day haul to 2.67 million admissions (USD 20.14 million). The Showbox-distributed title regained the top rank at the daily box office on Sunday.

The Tim BURTON-directed Disney update Dumbo failed to launch in Korea where it debuted with just 176,000 sales (USD 1.3 million) over the weekend with a total of 213,000 seats (USD 1.52 million) filled since its Wednesday launch.

Slowing 55% as it continues to wind down its run was fellow Disney title Captain Marvel, which sold another 175,000 tickets (USD 1.34 million), bringing its four-week tally to a stellar 5.54 million entries (USD 43.54 million).

Rounding out this week’s top five was the Taiwanese romantic drama Fall in Love at First Kiss, which bowed with 118,000 admissions (USD 870,000) over the three-day frame and 173,000 sales (USD 1.21 million) overall.

Currently topping the reservations chart among this week’s new releases is the new DC superhero Shazam!, while local melodrama Birthday, with top local stars SUL Kyung-gu and JEON Do-yeon, is also scheduled to open.
