Historic Start for Fantasy Epic Sequel

As record heat battered the country and schools were out for the holidays, the Korean box office soared to 5.46 million admissions sold over the three-day frame. Of those, 79% went to local titles as a specific local blockbuster rewrote the record books.

Following a mere eight months after Along with the Gods: The Two Worlds (2017), which became the second most successful Korean film of all time with 14.41 million admissions (USD 103.02 million), fantasy sequel Along with the Gods: The Last 49 Days, from distributor Lotte Entertainment, set a slew of records during its gigantic five-day opening.

These included largest opening day (1.25 million - 8.62 USD million), biggest single day (1.47 million - USD 11.38 million), largest opening weekend (3.84 million - 29.8 USD million) and biggest opening five-day bow (6.19 million - 46.12 USD million). Beyond that, it also set records for best Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday, as well as biggest two, three and four-day totals. It was also the first film to score five consecutive days over one million admissions.

It’s safe to say that the second Along with the Gods is destined for the ten million admissions club, quite possibly in record time. The only question that remains is how far it will go in the coming weeks.

It wasn’t all happy news for the fantasy epic as some people cried foul over its monopoly of screens. Despite Mission: Impossible - Fallout, which was also distributed by Lotte, bowing to huge numbers the previous week, it shed an unusually large amount of screens to make way for the local hit and saw its take tumble 63% to 849,000 viewers (USD 6.76 million), to push its total to a nevertheless impressive 5.49 million entries (USD 41.34 million).

The rest of the top five was occupied by animated content as distributors took advantage of the school summer holidays. Third place went to the Korean title Hello Carbot the Movie: The Cretaceous Period with 328,000 sales (USD 2.31 million) over the weekend and 622,000 spectators (USD 4.17 million) since Wednesday. Next was The Incredibles 2, down 60% for another 199,000 entries (USD 1.43 million) for a new total of 2.89 million admissions (USD 20.9 million). In fifth was local animation The Haunted House: The Secret of the Cave, down 59% as it sold another 100,000 tickets (USD 685,000) to boost its numbers to 622,000 sales (USD 4.1 million).

While Along with the Gods: The Last 49 Days is expected to continue its strong run, CJ Entertainment will release its North Korea-themed espionage drama The Spy Gone North on Wednesday, which is also poised to draw significant crowds.
