A QUIET PLACE Has Subdued Opening in 2nd

Korean films finally lost their advantage in the local marketplace as US titles rallied to claim 60% share of sales over the past weekend. Meanwhile, business was down 10% week-on-week as 1.72 million tickets were shifted over the frame.

Coming in at a comfortable first place was the Dwayne Johnson action-adventure vehicle Rampage, which brought in 608,000 viewers (USD 5.72 million) during its first weekend and a total of 687,000 spectators (USD 6.42 million) over the course of its first four days. In the absence of serious competition until next week’s Avengers: Infinity War, the Warner Bros creature feature stands a good chance of repeating on top of the chart this coming weekend.

Opening in a distant second was the horror film A Quiet Place, which has been a sensation in the United States but failed to match that performance in Korea, perhaps due to local horror fans having had their fill with the local horror smash GONJIAM: Haunted Asylum. The film debuted with 207,000 entries (USD 1.98 million) and has marshaled 266,000 sales (USD 249,000) since Thursday.

Down one more spot in its third weekend, as it slowed 60%, was Steven Spielberg’s VR-themed action-adventure film Ready Player One. The film brought in another 191,000 viewers (USD 1.89 million) to push its total to 2.07 million viewers (USD 14.97 million) to date.

Dropping a spot and 61% in its sophomore frame was the local affair comedy What a Man Wants. With another 186,000 tickets (USD 1.76 million) sold, the film has banked 1.01 million admissions (USD 8.84 million) in 11 days.

Closing out the top five after two weeks up top was the surprise local hit GONJIAM: Haunted Asylum. Down 66% in week three, the horror added 166,000 entries (USD 1.55 million) and has stacked a terrific 2.57 million admissions (USD 21.99 million) in total.

Opening in a close fifth place was the local Sewol ferry-themed documentary Intention which kicked off with 146,000 tickets (USD 1.34 million) sold and 178,000 entries (USD 1.62 million) over its first four days.

Even though it doesn’t open until April 27, Avengers: Infinity War has already soared to a commanding lead on the reservations chart. As of Monday morning, it has pre-sold over 200,000 tickets and accounts for 83% of all presales.

This week’s openers include the local thriller Marionette and drama Mothers, as well as the US western Hostiles, though all three may have trouble overtaking the holdovers on the chart.
