Korean Films Reclaim Majority Share

It was a photo finish at the Korean box office as a new local time travel thriller almost upended Tom Cruise in his second lap. However, business was down almost 25% week-on-week as admissions fell to 1.69 million. Despite not taking first place, Korean films were finally able to reclaim first place as they accounted for half of all sales over the weekend.

After setting a record on its opening day, the Tom Cruise-led blockbuster The Mummy slid 56% in its second weekend, dropping to 498,000 viewers (USD 3.76 million) for a running total of 3.24 million spectators (USD 23.85 million).

Just behind with 480,000 entries (USD 3.55 million) was local thriller A Day. Distributed by CGV ARTHOUSE and featuring KIM Myung-min and BYUN Yo-han, the film has accrued 566,000 admissions (USD 4.11 million) in its first four days.

Following a disappointing start, the Cannes-invited action film The Villainess had a strong hold as it slowed just 35% down to 247,000 sales (USD 1.86 million) giving it a 927,000 ticket (USD 6.66 million) haul to date.

In its third week, DC Comics tentpole Wonder Woman saw its take fall 47% as it brought in another 129,000 viewers (USD 946,000), which gives it a robust 2.08 million spectators (USD 14.86 million) to date.

Filling out the top five was local non-fiction sensation OUR PRESIDENT, down 39% for another 84,000 admissions (USD 610,000), for a stellar new total of 1.72 million entries (USD 12 million).

Looking to build on the success of previous installments in the country, Transformers: The Last Knight has an early lead on the reservations chart and will likely suck up most of the business over the coming week.
