Lunar New Year Welcomes Big Crowds

Fortunes changed at the box office as the two major local releases for the Lunar New Year switched places over the holiday. 4.19 million viewers bought tickets over the weekend, with 1.39 million of those selling on Lunar New Year day, which fell on Saturday. It was the biggest LNY day at the box office since 2014. Local films were far and away the top draw, accounting for 77% of all sales.

After opening in second place last week, KIM Sung-hoon’s Confidential Assignment soared 129% in its sophomore frame to record 1.93 million entries (USD 14.16 million) over the weekend. That gives the film 3.79 million viewers (USD 26.53 million) in 12 days with plenty more to come. The Hyun-bin and YOO Hae-jin starring spy action-comedy is the latest success from hitmaker JK Film, the company behind Haeundae (2009), Ode to My Father (2014) and The Himalayas (2015).

HAN Jae-rim’s The King remained almost flat but dropped one spot on the chart as it welcomed another 1.25 million spectators (USD 9.23 million) to theaters. The prosecutor drama with ZO In-sung and JUNG Woo-sung has now accumulated in 3.85 million admissions (USD 26.79 million).

Disney’s animation Moana slowed 11% in its third weekend, as it added 298,000 tickets (USD 2.12 million) for a new total of 1.73 million admissions (USD 11.51 million).

Zombie franchise closer Resident Evil: The Final Chapter, which features Korean actor LEE Joon-gi in a supporting role, opened in fourth place with 265,000 viewers (USD 2.03 million), which is the second best opening for the series in Korea, behind the fourth installment Resident Evil: Afterlife. The film has brought in 410,000 viewers (USD 2.93 million) in five days.

Dropping 41% in its fourth week and down one spot to fifth was the smash hit Japanese animation Your Name. The film brought in another 155,000 viewers (USD 1.11 million), adding to its already record-breaking 3.37 million admissions (USD 23.07 million), the highest ever haul for a Japanese film in Korea.

Hoping to shake up the chart this week will be Arrival, the critically acclaimed US sci-fi drama from Dennis Villeneuve, though Confidential Assignment is bound to post strong numbers again.
