Local Comedy MY ANNOYING BROTHER Opens Well in 2nd

A local comedy gave Hollywood a run for its money during another busy November weekend which saw 2.06 million viewers bustle into theaters. The market share of local fare rose to 45% but remained just below the combined powers of US and UK financiers whose product accounted for 52% of sales.

Harry Potter-verse franchise started Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them was still a solid draw in its second weekend, which saw it dip 37%. The fantasy film brought in another 896,000 viewers (USD 6.76 million), lifting its total to a robust 3.39 million viewers (USD 24.86 million). With competition beginning to mount this week, the film will slow further but should still be near the top of the chart by week’s end.

Opening with a strong 805,000 admissions (USD 5.63 million) in second place over the weekend, and registering 1.04 million entries (USD 7.12 million) since its Wednesday start was the local comedy My Annoying Brother with JO Jung-suk and DOH Kyung-soo. Following the smash success of LUCK-KEY last month, this new title demonstrates local audiences’ thirst for comedy, a genre that has struggled in the Korean marketplace over the last few years.

Remaining in third place in its fifth week was Marvel title Doctor Strange after slowing another 46%. With another 104,000 tickets (USD 736,000) banked, the blockbuster is now sitting on a cool 5.38 million admissions total (USD 40.1 million).

Crashing a hefty 79% down after its disappointing start was the local teen-aimed fantasy VANISHING TIME: A BOY WHO RETURNED with GANG Dong-won. The film added just 44,000 spectators (USD 312,000) to give it a total of 489,000 viewers (USD 3.24 million).

Closing out the top five was German animation The Little Medic. The film opened with 31,000 admissions (USD 208,000) over the three-day and 33,000 entries (USD 219,000) over its first four days.

Threatening to shake up the chart this coming weekend are local kidnap thriller MISSING with UHM Ji-won and KONG Hyo-jin, as well as the Tom Cruise vehicle Jack Reacher: Never Go Back.
