LIGHTS OUT Opens in 2nd

Following the end of the lengthy Korean wave, audiences began to shrink at the Korean box office, down to 2.23 million admissions as Korean film maintained a modest edge of the market share at 54%.

Maintaining its top spot for the third time was the disaster drama Tunnel which slid 40% to add another 665,351 viewers (USD 5 million), bringing its total to 6.28 million spectators (USD 45.35 million). Though it is slowing down, the KIM Seong-hun picture is hot on the heels of Operation Chromite and may end the summer as the second biggest hit of the season.

US horror Lights Out, already a smash hit in America, had a solid opening in second place, where it welcomed 397,458 moviegoers (USD 2.93 million) and 534,423 admissions (USD 3.88 million) over its first five days.

Slipping one spot and 54% was Colonial Era drama The Last Princess, which accrued another 230,525 viewers (USD 1.69 million), giving it a new total of 5.31 million tickets sold (USD 37.52 million).

Hollywood redo Ghostbusters mustered an underwhelming 215,511 spectators (USD 1.6 million) in its first weekend, reflecting the property’s lack of popularity in the market. Since Thursday, the horror-action-comedy has brought in 248,876 admissions (USD 1.82 million).

Star Trek Beyond crashed two thirds in its sophomore frame, bringing in another 167,949 viewers (USD 1.38 million). The sci-fi sequel has now brought in 1.01 million viewers (USD 8.03 million), far below its predecessor at the same point.

Meryl Streep-led drama Florence Foster Jenkins opened at the top of the diversity chart with 54,887 spectators (USD 404,471) and 89,967 admissions (USD 631,349) since its debut.

Jason Statham action title Mechanic: Resurrection looks to be the top draw among new releases this week but will face strong competition from resilient holdover Tunnel.
