A VIOLENT PROSECUTOR Begins to Wind Down

A slew of new releases lifted admissions at the Korean box office, as Hollywood fare edged out local competition with 61% of the marketplace. Overall, 2.56 million tickets were shifted over the frame.

The R-rated superhero film Deadpool got off to a strong start, with 1.06 million viewers (USD 7.42 million) in its debut and 1.7 million admissions (USD 11.67 million) to date. Though some strong competition is on the way, the film is benefiting from good audience reactions and should continue to draw in crowds.

After a huge success of first two weeks, Showbox thriller A Violent Prosecutor slid 67% for a 452,076 spectators (USD 2.94 million) on the weekend, lifting its total to a phenomenal 9.04 million admissions (USD 58.65 million). At the rate it’s dropping, it may fall short of the 10 million viewer mark, making it more frontloaded than most Korean hits, but the film has more proven the drawing power of stars HWANG Jung-min (Veteran, 2015) and GANG Dong-won (The Priests, 2015).

Opening in third was the Disney animated title Zootopia with 327,038 viewers (USD 2.05 million) and 419,714 admissions (USD 2.61 million) since its Wednesday start, while Dreamworks’ Kung Fu Panda 3 added another 97,964 tickets (USD 600,226) in sixth place for a robust 3.9 million viewers total (USD 24.95 million).

New local films opened in fourth and fifth places, with omnibus romcom Like for Likes, with YOO Ah-in (The Throne, 2015) bringing 320,433 spectators (USD 2.09 million) over the frame and 476,798 admissions (USD 3.04 million) in five days, while LEE Joon-ik’s black and while biopic DONGJU; The Portrait of A Poet with KANG Ha-neul (also in Like for Likes) mustered 178,427 viewers (USD 1.14 million) and 229,595 admissions (USD 1.44 million) since opening, a solid result for a heavy drama.

Among Oscar hopefuls, The Danish Girl opened with 36,256 sales (USD 244,644), while Carol slipped down to 18,421 viewers (USD 125,866) for an impressive 278,900 admissions total (USD 1.88 million).

Opening this week will be three local films, the comfort women drama Spirits’ Homecoming, the melodrama UNFORGETTABLE and the JEON Do-yeon and GONG Yoo melodrama A Man and A Woman from arthouse director LEE Yoon-ki.
