THE RED FILTER IS WITHDRAWN to Screen in TIFF Wavelengths Section

The Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF) has steadily been revealing the program for its 2021 edition, and so far a pair of Korean works have been invited. HONG Sung-eun’s indie drama Aloners and KIM Min-jung’s experimental short The red filter is withdrawn (2020) will screen at the prestigious Canadian film festival next month.

Aloners, HONG’s debut film, had its world premiere earlier this year in the Korean Competition section of the Jeonju International Film Festival (JIFF). Lead actress GONG Seung-yeon received one of the Best Actor Awards at Jeonju. GONG plays an employee at a credit card company call center who lives a solitary life as she focuses on her work. This includes rebuffing a friendly neighbor, but when this lonely neighbor is found dead one day, she begins to reprioritize her responsibilities.

The film will take part in TIFF’s Discovery section, where it will have its international premiere. Following that, it will travel to the San Sebastián International Film Festival which takes place later in the month.

Shot on Jeju Island and inspired by René MAGRITTE’s ‘La condition humaine’, The red filter is withdrawn explores colonial places such as coastal caves and military bunkers. KIM’s film debuted in Korea last year and was invited to the Berlin International Film Festival earlier this year. The film will feature in the Wavelengths lineup in Toronto.

This year’s TIFF will take place from September 9 to 18.
