LEE Sang-geun’s hit disaster action-comedy EXIT (2019) received the White Mulberry Award from this year’s Far East Film Festival in Udine. This year’s FEFF took place exclusively online, owing to the spread of the COVID-19 disease. The festival opened late last month with the big-budget disaster drama ASHFALL (2019), starring LEE Byung-hun and HA Jung-woo.

EXIT stars JO Jung-suk and Yoon-a as people who are stuck inside a building when a deadly gas threatens Central Seoul. The film was last year’s biggest summer success, welcoming 9.43 million viewers (USD 65.88 million). The White Mulberry prize is awarded to the most distinguished first feature.

Prior to his feature debut, director LEE made several shorts and served in the directing department of RYOO Seung-wan’s Dachimawa Lee (2008). RYOO went on to produce EXIT through Filmmaker R & K, the production company he runs with GANG Hye-jung.

The top prizes at FEFF this year, the Golden Mulberry Audience Award and the Black Mulberry, the audience award for Shogun Pass holders, both went to the film Better Days from Hong Kong filmmaker Derek TSANG.

This year’s online-only 22nd edition of the Far East Film Festival took place from June 26 to July 4. A total of 11 films were screened as part of the Italian film festival this year, out of a total of 46 titles on offer.
