A bevy of Korean stars are ready to set sail on The Pirates: Goblin Flag (translated title), the sequel to the 2014 hit The Pirates. KANG Ha-neul, HAN Hyo-joo, LEE Kwang-soo and KWON Sang-woo lead an ensemble in a film with a whole new story and set of characters.

KANG Ha-neul, who hasn’t been seen on the big screen in a leading role since enlisted for his military service in 2017, is known for Midnight Runners (2017), Forgotten (2017) and DONGJU; The Portrait of a Poet (2016).

HAN Hyo-joo was seen in KIM Jee-woon’s ILLANG : THE WOLF BRIGADE in 2018 and recently appeared as part of the main cast of the USA Network series Treadstone

LEE Kwang-soo appeared in Inseparable Bros and Tazza: One Eyed Jack last year and is also in the upcoming disaster film Sinkhole (literal title).

KWON Sang-woo is coming off a busy run of films that started late last year with the romcom Love, Again (2019) and continued with The Divine Move 2: The Wrathful (2019) and this year’s Lunar New Year film HITMAN: AGENT JUN.

The film will also feature CHAE Soo-bin of ROSEBUD (2019), EXO star Sehun in his first Korean film role, character actor KIM Sung-oh (Unstoppable, 2018) and THE OUTLAWS (2017) supporting actor PARK Ji-hwan.

The Pirates sequel will mark the third directorial outing for director KIM Joung-hoon, who previously helmed the investigative crime-comedy THE ACCIDENTAL DETECTIVE, which featured KWON Sang-woo, a Chuseok holiday hit in 2015, and the earlier romantic comedy Petty Romance (2010).

The first instalment of The Pirates, which was directed by LEE Seok-hoon, was a major summer hit in 2014, managing to draw 8.66 million viewers, despite hitting screens while Roaring Currents (2014) was still in the early stages of the biggest box office run of all time in Korea.

Lotte Entertainment returns as investor on the sequel, which will begin principal photography in July. CHEON Sung-il, a screenwriter and executive producer on the original, has also returned to pen the sequel.
