First Korean Film to Be Recognized by Top Hollywood Guilds
In the week leading up the Academy Awards nominations, BONG Joon-ho’s PARASITE(2019) received a flurry of major nominations with industry groups in Hollywood, all of which represented firsts for Korean films. The acclaimed film was nominated for top prizes by the Producers Guild of America (PGA), the Directors’ Guild of America (DGA) and the Writers’ Guild of America (WGA).
The film’s producers, Director BONG and KWAK Sin-ae, were nominated for Outstanding Producer of Theatrical Motion Pictures by the PGA, along with the people behind nine other major titles also vying for top prizes this awards season. The PGA Awards ceremony was held on January 18 at the Hollywood Palladium in Los Angeles, with the prize in that category going to the producers of epic war title 1917.
Director BONG was among the five nominees for Outstanding Directorial Achievement in Theatrical Feature Film by the DGA. Their awards ceremony will take place on January 25 in downtown LA.
BONG and his co-writer HAN Jin-won were recognized for Best Original Screenplay alongside four other contenders, while five other films compete for Best Adapted Screenplay by the WGA. The Writers Guild Awards will be held on February 1 in the Beverly Hilton.
PARASITE(2019) was first presented to the world at the Cannes Film Festival last year, where it earned the festival’s top prize, the Palme d’Or, a first for a Korean film. A few days after its major guild nominations last week, the film once again made history by receiving six nominations from the Academy Awards, for Best Picture, Best Foreign Language Film, Best Original Screenplay, Best Editing and Best Production Design.
It is one of only four films to received nominations from all three of these guilds this year, along with Martin SCORSESE’s The Irishman, Taika WAITITI’s Jojo Rabbit and 1917.
