LOVE IS A CRAZY THING Star Found Dead of Apparent Suicide

The Korean entertainment industry reeled in shock following the news of the death of veteran actress JEON Mi-sun on Saturday, June 29. Known for her roles in Memories Of Murder (2003), Love Is A Crazy Thing (2005) and this summer’s upcoming historical epic The King’s Letters, the actress passed away as a result of self-inflicted wound in a Jeonju hotel.

Reportedly suffering from depression, JEON had been missing for two days prior to her death. She checked into a hotel room in Jeonju, where she had to perform in a play, and was found hanged in the bathroom. Though no suicide note was found, initial investigations discovered no signs of forced entry and ruled out any foul play.

JEON’s agency Boas Entertainment confirmed the star’s passing, relating that “The late JEON Mi-sun had received treatments for her depression. We regret that we bring sad tidings.” Reports suggest that JEON’s depression may have been aggravated owing to the recent passing of a relative and her mother’s illness.

The tragic news has reignited concerns over mental welfare in the Korean entertainment industry, where the pressure to succeed and the harsh conditions of the industry have been responsible for several high-profile suicides over the years.

Born on December 7, 1970 in Seoul, JEON began her career on the small screen in 1986 and had been consistently active in film and TV ever since. Some of her most famous film roles include supporting parts in BONG Joon-ho’s Memories Of Murder (2003) and Mother (2009), while her leading roles include the drama Love Is A Crazy Thing (2005) and the horror-thriller Hide and Seek (2013).

JEON was laid to rest in a private ceremony on July 2.
