PARK Seo-joon and KIM Jae-joong Pick Up Rising Star and Next Generation Awards in Hong Kong
Acclaimed filmmaker LEE Chang-dong picked up the Best Director Award for his latest critical hit BURNING (2018) at the 13th Asian Film Awards ceremony in Hong Kong on March 17. The prize was in addition to the Lifetime Achievement Award that he was already scheduled to receive during the ceremony.
BURNING(2018), which is based on a short story by Haruki MURAKAMI and stars YOO Ah-in (Veteran, 2015), Steven YEUN (Okja, 2017) and newcomer JUN Jong-seo, initially debuted in competition at the Cannes Film Festival last spring and has gone on to earn a raft of international awards. It also became the first ever Korean film to be shortlisted for the Best Foreign Language Film category at the Academy Awards, though it ultimately didn’t make the final selection.
This is now the third time that Director LEE has been both nominated for and won the Best Director Award at the AFAs, having previously done so for Poetry (2010) and Secret Sunshine (2007), which also picked up the Best Film Award way back at the 2nd edition of the ceremony in 2008.
Director LEE was not the only Korean prizewinner on Sunday, as Midnight Runners (2017) lead PARK Seo-jun was honored with the AFA Rising Star award, while popular JYJ member KIM Jae-joong, who has appeared on the big screen in Code Name : Jackal (2012), received the AFA Next Generation Award.
