VR TOON to Offer a Virtual Experience of Webtoon’s 3-Dimensional Space
Global cinema chain CJ CGV and VFX company Dexter Studios are teaming up to offer VR movies. On January 19th, via a press release, CGV and Dexter Studios announced they had signed a contract for the supply of VR content. The two studios also revealed that they will co-produce an adaptation of DEY’s Horror Channel webtoon series Please Help Me and show the VR film in CGV theaters, beginning with CGV’s Yongsan I’Park Mall theater.
Dexter Studios produced fantasy blockbuster Along With the Gods: The Two Worlds(2017) which became a smash-hit in Korea as well as around Southeast Asian countries, and has put great effort into the development of VR technology. The company has put out various VR cinematic works such as White Rabbit which was invited to the Bucheon International Fantastic Film Festival (BiFan) in 2017, action-comedy Midnight Runners, Jason KIM’s horror film Trapped and JANG Hyung-yun’s animated film From the Earth.
CGV and Dexter Studios’ VR TOON projects plan to give audiences an immersive experience that will resemble a 3-dimensional webtoon environment. “VR TOON is the first concept attempted for VR content,” Dexter Studios said and added, “We use the webtoon’s story and art panels to design the VR content.”
Dexter Studios plans to develop VR TOON projects specifically for collaboration with CGV. “This year, we aim to produce from 8 to 10 VR projects.” Dexter Studios said. Partner CGV echoed Dexter Studios’ enthusiasm stating “We will consistently proceed to collaborate with popular cartoons and webtoons of various genres through the first VR TOON at theaters in Korea.”
