Several Award Winning Indie Films to Receive Theatrical Releases

Korea’s specialty film distributors have confirmed their lineups for 2018. Korean distributors specializing in art house and independent films, such as CGV ARTHOUSE, INDIESTORY, Cinema DAL, MOVement and Atnine Film, recently announced the list of films that would receive domestic theatrical releases in 2018. Local distributors may differ from the Korean international sales companies who export the films overseas.

For CGV ARTHOUSE’s 2018 calendar, the first half of the year will include JEON Go-woon’s Microhabitat and LEE Dong-eun’s Mothers. Both films premiered at the 22nd Busan International Film Festival (BIFF), with Microhabitat winning the CGV ARTHOUSE Award. The second half of the year will see the release of CHA Sung-duk’s Yeongju and KIM Ui-suk’s After My Death, the New Currents Award winner at BIFF last year.

INDIESTORY’s lineup will include LEE Il-ha’s documentary Counters and JUNG Min-kyu’s Land of Happiness. KO Bong-soo's Loser’s Adventure, which premiered at the 18th Jeonju International Film Festival (JIFF), will be distributed by INDIESTORY and CGV ARTHOUSE in the first half of the year. The low-budget drama won the Daemyueong Culture Wave Award at JIFF, which is given to the best Korean feature film screened at the festival.

In late January, Cinema DAL will release The Remnants, a documentary about the 2009 Yongsan Tragedy, jointly directed by KIM Il-ran and LEE Hyuk-sang. Cinema DAL will co-distribute the film with Atnine Film. They will also release KARLl Jae-min’s Into the Night at the end of March as well as LEE Kang-hyun's Possible Faces sometime in the first-half of the year.

MOVement’s 2018 lineup will feature both of the Director’s Vision Award winners from the 22nd BIFF; KIM Joong-hyeon’s February and JEONG Ga-young’s Hit the Night. February also won the Grand Prize at the 43rd Seoul Independent Film Festival. Other films in MOVement’s lineup include LEE Wanmin’s Jamsil, JANG Woo-jin’s Autumn, Autumn, MA Min-ji’s documentary Family in the Bubble and the recently completed musical Ferris Wheel (translated title), which was co-directed by BAEK Jae-ho and LEE Hee-seop. MOVement will also jointly distribute LEE Kwang-kuk's romantic drama A Tiger in Winter with Green Narae Media.

Other anticipated indie releases include SUN Ho-bin’s documentary Myeoneuri: My Son's Crazy Wife, which was released by Sycomad and Story Forest on January 17, 2018.
