Korea-China Co-Productions Expected in Theaters 2017

Korea’s top movie studio CJ Entertainment has announced a lineup of China co-productions which will include remakes of their 2015 titles Veteran and Salut d’Amour.

Directed by RYOO Seung-wan, Veteran was last year’s top-grossing Korean title, attracting 13.41 million spectators (USD 89.7 million). The Chinese do-over will feature Chinese actor SUN Honglei (Drug War, 2012), who will take over HWANG Jung-min’s lead role. From director KANG Je-kyu, the senior romantic drama Salut d’Amour will be remade by Hong Kong actor, director and producer Eric TSANG. Both films are in pre-production and targeting release in 2017. Korean talent will participate in the rewrites and production of each project.

Meanwhile, the production slate also includes Kung Fu Robot, a new sci-fi comedy from blockbuster filmmaker JK YOUN which will be a co-production between Korean VFX company Dexter Studios and Chinese outfit Wanda Pictures.

CJ also announced that RYOO’s new film Battleship Island, which is gearing up for production and will also feature HWANG Jung-min, will be released simultaneously in Korea and China.

JUNG Tae-sung, the head of CJ Entertainment, stated that “the ultimate goal of CJ’s Korea-China co-production is not simple success in the two countries.” He added,“If the strengths of the film industries of the two countries, which share diverse historical experiences and Asian values, are well-combined, great things may sweep the global market.”
