Vesoul International Asian Movies Film Festival Prepares 22nd Edition

Vesoul International Asian Movies Film Festival in France, a longtime supporter of cutting edge Korean cinema, is preparing to unspool its 22nd edition next month, over February 3rd to the 10th. The competition has yet to be unveiled, but leading the jury will be none other than top Korean director IM Sang-soo.

IM will also receive the Golden Honorary Award for his career’s work during the Festival’s opening ceremony in Edwige Feuillère’s theater. He will serve on the jury with Iranian filmmaker Mania AKBARI, Indonesian journalist Nan ACHNAS and Thai director Euthana MUKDASANIT.

Following work as assistant director on KIM Young-bin’s Kim’s War (1992) and a screenwriter on PARK Jong-won’s Eternal Empire (1995), IM debuted as a filmmaker in 1998 with Girl’s Night Out, which was then followed by the acclaimed Tears (2001). He then achieved commercial and critical success with A Good Lawyer's Wife (2003) and The President’s Last Bang (2005). After 2007’s The Old Garden, IM received consecutive Cannes Film Festival invitations for his films The Housemaid (2010) and The Taste of Money (2012). He most recently made Intimate Enemies for Fox International Productions last year.

Vesoul will also stage a special focus on “Literary adaptations in Korean Cinema”, which will include IM’s The Old Garden, adapted from HWANG Sok-yong’s novel. The festival’s top prize, the Cycle d’Or, was won by ZHANG Lu’s Grain In Ear in 2006, O Muel’s Jiseul in 2013 and LEE Yong-seung’s 10 Minutes in 2014.
