SIFF Project Features 3 China/Korea Pitches

The Shanghai International Film Festival has announced the full lineup of contestants for its signature Golden Goblet competition, which will now see recent Cannes entry The Shameless vie for the prize alongside previously announced Korean drama Salut d’Amour from KANG Je-gyu. A total of 14 films, including the world premiere of Antoine Fuqua’s boxing drama Southpaw with Jake Gyllenhaal, have been selected in competition for the 18th SIFF.

Directed by OH Seung-wook (Kilimanjaro, 2000) and starring JEON Do-yeon (Secret Sunshine, 2007) and KIM Nam-gil (The Pirates), CGV Arthouse’s romantic noir The Shameless debuted in the Un Certain Regard section of the Cannes Film Festival in May and had a modest debut in domestic theaters last week.

Also announced were the entrants for the SIFF Project, a project market for films either from the Chinese diaspora or global productions with China. Three of 35 selected projects are co-productions with Korea. These include the sci-fi Reset, from The Target director CHANG, the horror project Hydrophobia, from K-Horror mainstay KIM Dong-bin (Red Eye, 2005), and the investigative thriller The Reward of Cruel, from first time filmmaker and Beijing Film Academy graduate SU Yang.

Meanwhile, the Dankook University graduate features A Fresh Start (dir. JANG Woo-jin) and End of Winter (dir. KIM Dae-hwan) are also up for the Asian New Talent prize. The 18th Shanghai International Film Festival will unspool from June 13th to 21st.
