Amid the blooming cherry blossoms of Yeoido in Seoul, the Jeonju International Film Festival (JIFF) held the press conference for its 15th edition in the IFC Mall’s CGV Theater. 181 films from 46 countries will screen in Jeonju over 10 days in May, which will include 40 world premieres.

Opening this year’s festivities will be Mad Sad Bad, a 3D omnibus featuring the works of directors RYOO Seung-wan (The Berlin File), Han Ji-seung (Papa [2012]) and KIM Tae-yong (Late Autumn [2010]).

Already announced was this year’s Jeonju Digital Project, which is expanding to three full-length features, from Hungarian director Gyorgy Palfi and local indie cineastes SHIN Yeon-shick (Rough Play) and PARK Jung-bum (The Journals of Musan [2010]).

In addition to the Korean competition, which was revealed last month, a number of new local works will be featured in the Korean Cinemascape section. Indie auteurs KIM Kyung-mook and LEE Sang-woo will present their new works Futureless Things and Dear Dictator for the first time, while LEESONG Hee-il’s Berlinale film Night Flight will also screen.

Deviating from previous years, festival organizers announced that JIFF’s whole lineup would screen by May 7th, with an awarding ceremony that evening, allowing for the festival to focus on international competition and award winning films during the final three days. JIFF Executive programmer KIM Young-jin articulated their desire to concentrate and spread the word on the festival’s best films.

Comparing the discovery of independent cinema with a butterfly’s search for fragrant flowers, through this year's moto 'Blooming in Jeonju,' JIFF posits itself as a grounds of discovery for global independent cinema. This year’s 15th JIFF will unspool from May 1st to 10th.
