The 15th International Women’s Film Festival in Seoul is to be held at the Megabox Theater in Shinchon from May 24th until the 30th. The IWFFS held a press conference at a culture hall of a Seoul Department Store on April 23rd where festival officials revealed the event’s vision. At the press conference the festival director, LEE Hye-kyung as well as co-festival director BYEON Jae-ran and the programmers as well as the director of the trailer film were in attendance.

This year the slogan will be “She’s Coming” which symbolizes looking forward, expectation as well as challenge for the future. The event will focus on bringing out its own value and meaning as well as its own voice.

The opening film will be director Sally Potter’s Ginger and Rosa. Sally Potter is the director of Orlando, a remake of Virginia Woolf’s classic. Ginger and Rosa deals with two friends with the backdrop of the early 1960’s before the political revolutions of 1968 and feminist movement. The two girls have left-wing parents and the film focuses on their political experiments as well as sexual freedom and friendship.

There will also be a section titled “Actress, a muse with a camera”. In the section, PANG Eun-jin’s Perfect Number, KU Hye-sun’s The Peach Tree as well as YUN Eun-hye’s The Knitting will be screened. In the “Asian Short Film Competition” section, 19 films selected from 373 submissions from Taiwan, Japan, Thailand, Israel and India will be shown.

The environment for the development of female film talents is to be strengthened this year at the event. There will be programs in script mentoring and education. Also, the Korea Woman Directors Network is to be established with the aim of consistent exchange and solidarity among female directors. Also, the IWFFN, composed of woman film festivals in France, New York and Germany is to be set up where a common goal between international women’s film festivals as well as common agenda will be shared at an international forum to be held in Seoul.

Festival Director LEE said, “there are many great female film talents around the world and they have a great passion for cinema. We will make it possible for this precious asset through this network.”
