12 Vietnamese Films Screen This Year, 1 Title a Month, 2 Times a Week

Korean Film Council (KOFIC, Chairman OH Seok Geun) introduced Vietnamese films to local moviegoers. From July 18th to 19th, the Lotte Cinema’s World Tower screened three Vietnamese films during the ‘Vietnamese Film Days’ event.

Co-hosted by KOFIC, Vietnam Cinema Department (VCD), Lotte Cultureworks and Lumix Media, this event screened The Tailor by TRAN Buu Loc and Kay NGUYEN, Jailbait by LE Thanh Son and The Girl from Yesterday by PHAN Gia Nhat Linh. The Tailor is about a family who operates a traditional Vietnamese costume boutique, back in the 1970s, while Jailbait is a romantic comedy about a 38-year-old yoga instructor. This romantic comedy was distributed by CJ CGV Vietnam and broke the local box office records of all time in June. Finally, The Girl from Yesterday is a youth drama that focuses on portraits of teenagers’ first loves. The three films were all recommended by VCD. At 6 p.m. on July 18th, the opening ceremony was attended by insiders and filmmakers, including KOFIC Chairman OH, VCD deputy director LEE Phuong Zheng and Jailbait director LE.

KOFIC changed ‘Vietnamese Film Days in Korea’, which was held to commemorate the 25th anniversary of Korea-Vietnam diplomatic relations last year, into ‘Vietnamese Film Days’ this year, and plans to continue hosting the event. From now on, twelve Vietnamese films screen annually at two branches of Lotte Cinema (Seoul and Busan); one film a month and twice a week (weekday and weekend), as a part of a Vietnamese Film Screening Support Program for Multicultural Families. “We hope the event will raise the Korean audience’s interest in Vietnamese films and help facilitate cultural exchanges between the two countries,” KOFIC said. “It will be a good opportunity for Korean filmmakers and moviegoers who are interested in Vietnamese cinema, as well as Vietnamese audiences, including multicultural families and international students, to watch the best Vietnamese movies.”
